![]() The people of Madura come from mixed ancestry including Chinese, Arabs, and Javanese, so talking about exact lineages is very difficult. In the beginning, Pencak Silat in Madura was shared and practiced only within the family. The following text is a translation of Guru Daniel’s response to questions I had about the differences between Inti Ombak and other well known styles in Madura and Central Java. ![]() As with most forms of silat, knife handling and defense play a prominent role in the motion, however there is also an emphasis on utilizing whatever tools are available, whether it be a knife, belt, pen or the empty hand. Inner Wave Pencak Silat’s diverse roots give rise to a diverse curriculum including animal forms, element theory, yoga-like breathing and mediation in addition to core silat motion. The name inner wave reflects the duality of these styles high and low, internal and external, physical and mental. This style emphasizes defense and inner power. Conversely the Mataram style of Central Java was taught only to members of the royal family in Yogyakarta. ![]() Traditionally Maduran Silat was practiced by fisherman who made heavy use of low, wide stances for stability on boats and tidal pools. ![]() Inner Wave Pencak Silat (Indonesian: Persatuan Pencak Silat Inti Ombak) is a style developed by my teacher, Guru Daniel Prasetya, which blends Pencak Silat from Madura (a small island neighboring Java to the East) and Central Java.
